Description
A veteran proudly holds the American flag, as one of his unseen fellow VFW members holds the Oklahoma flag which are both reflected in his helmet on a sunny day in 2009 at the Halliburton Stadium in Duncan, Oklahoma, to welcome home members of the National Guard 158th unit. The Battery B, 1st Battalion-158th Field Artillery had been deployed for almost exactly one year when they returned in August 2009.
The welcome home ceremony included several speeches from various ranking members of the Oklahoma National Guard, including Brigadier Gen. Robbie Asher of Oklahoma City and the company’s own commanding officer, Capt. Robert McLoud of Lawton.
I covered their original deployment a year earlier and was fortunate to cover their return home. This is one of my favorite images of that event. Another was when two children broke from the stadium stands and ran down during formation to greet their father. They had no idea they weren't supposed to do that, but it was such a grand moment.
I did a re-edit on this image to enhance the reflection and cloud details.
