Description
With a crack of his bullwhip, Bob Payne, and his horse, Curdle Up, kept the longhorns in place, making sure they didn't veer into the traffic that lined the highways and roads through Jefferson and Stephens counties. This was during the Oklahoma Centennial Chisholm Trail Cattle Drive that took four weeks to go from the Red River to Kansas along the original Chisholm Trail path.
"I rode drag the first day, then Freddie (Craig) found out I was the real deal and he moved me to point. We met on the cattle drive." Bob counted the cattle head on this adventure, 434.
Born on a ranch, it's all Bob knows and loves. For 20 years he worked for Robert Gray/Gray Farms out of Enid, OK, but at age 58, less than a year after the Trail, the native Oklahoman moved out to New Mexico to work on a private ranch. (I've heard he's worked in other states since).
This was one of the many incredible images I shot during the 2007 Oklahoma Centennial Chisholm Trail Cattle Drive.
More of Bob's story, along with photographs and the stories of the cowboys in their own words is in my book, Riding the Chisholm Trail: Once in a Lifetime" published through Blurb. It is the only book documentation of this event. This book would make a great gift for one of the cowboys, along with a print from here.
