A horse grazes in a pasture on the Historic Pruitt Ranch near Velma, Oklahoma. The land is virtually the same as it was in the days of the Chisholm Trail, 150 years ago. The Historic Pruitt Ranch marked 100 years 1914-2014, and 7 generations. I recently met up again with the current ranch holder, Jimmie Pruitt, during the 2019 National Day of the Cowboy celebration in Duncan, OK. He's still doing well, even gave me his ranch business card. I had the pleasure years ago, during my newspaper reporting career, to travel around his ranch with him, as he shared some history of the ranch and family. He was struggling to keep the ranch and horses going at that time, during a major drought spell here in Oklahoma. He told me in July 2019 that he is now in the Angus beef business.

No Place Like Home 08/07/2019
Everyone needs a once in a lifetime experience. You know the kind. One that leaves a lasting impression and even changes how you look at life, how you look at your surroundings. I wrote that in a book I published in 2009, "Riding the Chisholm Trail: Once in a Lifetime" after I had that experience that changed the way I looked at the world around me. Now 10 years later, that single day and the two years it took me to edit the images and write the stories in that book, I realize it continues to impact me. It's given me a new appreciation of our country's history and what it took for our pioneers, my ancestors, to forge what we now enjoy and many times undervalue.
