Description
Oklahoma Centennial Chisholm Trail Cattle Drive 1907-2007
Portrait of Carmen Schultz, 56, of Medford, Oklahoma, rode and worked on the Chisholm Trail in one of the most modern day historic adventures.
"I had two horses, switched every week (four weeks). Sage and Jas (Jas) named after my deceased brother. --- You find out you don't need a whole lot of clothes, things. Every week we would send home extra jeans."
"Life goes by too fast ...I will find myself driving in the car, 25 miles an hour, you get in that pace, you start slowing down."
Carmen's husband, Bill, would meet the camp on the weekends and help her change horses. He also rode with the crew on the last couple of days. Carmen served as foreman for four days on the last week.
She also rode and worked on the cattle drive in 1993, from Hennessey, Oklahoma, to Caldwell, Kansas, for the anniversary of the Cherokee Strip Land Run.
I interviewed Carmen for the book I authored (which can be found on Blurb). It is the only complete book documentation of photography and stories of the cowboys and cowgirls, in their words, available.
