Artist's Description
This was a ferris wheel that was in a park for years. It now sits unused on Main Street Duncan, Oklahoma. I photographed this May 22, 2011, as a storm front was moving in. I knew there was high risk for tornados, but wanted to capture as much as I could, of course, wondering if things like this would still be around after the storms blew up. Little did I know at that moment that it would become a day in history for tornado devastation - in Joplin, MO. I consider the ferris wheel a monument, or landmark, for Stephens County, since it has been around for so long.

Now 10 years later, that single day and the two years it took me to edit the images and write the stories in that book, I realize it continues to impact me. It's given me a new appreciation of our country's history and what it took for our pioneers, my ancestors, to forge what we now enjoy and many times undervalue. While it took me most of my life to appreciate these things, reflection...
